If your ABS is working, dont be afraid to "stand on them" and let them do their job. Take your car to an empty parking lot and try it out. It often takes some people a little while to get comfortable with the feeling and trust the car to respond a certain way. There is still a tendency to want to pump the brakes ( not ).
