Subject: Re: How to replace a headliner?

"Craig Roberts" ... > Anybody know where I can find info on replacing headliners? > The headliner of my '91 900S has totoally detatched itself. Craig, here is a repost of what I said on this same subject back on Jan 8th of this year, if you are looking for alternate ideas that is... [begin repost...] Drooping headliner is a VERY common problem. First off repair solutions are not always the prettiest, so if your goal is to make it look perfect, about your only solution is to replace the headliner. However if your goal is to simply get it off your head, you can try regluing it. 3M makes a fabric adheasive you can often buy at auto parts stores (at least here in the USA). It works ok, but is not permanent, and you likely will get wrinkles and bumps in the headliner. With my hatchback, it was fairly easy to do the back. Open the hatch, pull down the rubber gasket along the top and then I could aim the nozzle between the drooping headliner and spray on the yellow insualtion. Then smooth as best you can the headliner back up against the roof and replace rubber gasket. For the front, around my sun visors, I cut slits in the headliner and inserted the nozzles in there. Kind of ugly but it got it up and out of the way. But this only lasted about a year and the back started to come loose again, so I sprayed it up again. Less than a year later is dropped again, so just this past fall, I simply attacked it with the staple gun (used the shorter staples). Worked great. Not exactly pretty, but you don't really notice the staples unless you look up at them. It does the job! Another fix I heard about were headliner screws (served the same purpose as staples, which I read you could buy at NAPA auto parts, but I was not able to locate them. And yet another involved getting long thin bars (thick wire really), cutting to just fit when you insert one end under the gasket on one side of the car and then the other end in the other side so it bows upward. A few of these will hold most of the headliner up I guess. Although staples are quicker and easier! <grin> Patrick [... end repost]
