Dennis, your '89 9k has a 2.0L engine without a balance shaft. The 2.3 with the balance chains is the problem child. I am not saying that I am afraid of them, but many have needed replacing at 100k - 200k mi. Th balance chain addition seems to be the complicating factor which adversely affects the life of the chain system.
