Subject: 95SE Noisy Engine (Gearbox??) on acceleration

My SAAB 9-5SE (1998)Auto LPT Saloon was into the dealer some 4 months ago to have its timing chain / balancer shaft chain replaced. (Problem was initially spotted by a mechanic who thought the engine 'sounded odd'.....Hmmm ok mate - you're the expert). Some £2000 and 3 days in the bay (thank god for warranty) and, 4 months on, the engine still seems very noisy on acceleration (gruff and grinding is the only way I can describe it). The engine also seems to be labouring more than it used to or, indeed, ought to. Sure, you might expect some noise from general wear and tear with 85k on the clock but with the work on the chains 'supposedly' completed successfully, I would not expect such a gruff/grind as the auto goes up through the gears on acceleration. Having said that, once it reaches cruising/ constant speed, she hums along very nicely. I don't want to suspect the dealer workmanship, but before I go tackle them with it (forewarned / forarmed etc) would like to know if anyone on the NG has similar experiences/problems or can offer advise on what else the problem might be. Could it be a problem in the auto gearbox??? Grateful for any help you can throw my way before I enter the Lions Den. Thanks in advance. Mick.
