Subject: Coolant system question

I have a '92 900 with 80K on it. I just replaced the radiator and hoses back in November. The car started to have steam coming from the expansion tank cap (my wife reports!) No antifreeze in tank - I fillied it up to min level and a couple minutes later it was drained, so I filled it up again and this tuime it held in expansion tank. I let it sit all day and it didn't lose any antifreeze - took for a short drive and it started to heat-up rapidly - but did not overheat since I threw the heat on but there was no loss of coolant. Fan belts all look fine and radiotors new, is there anmyway to tell if it's fan, thermostat or gasket. When viewing the engine from drivers side, I did notice some dried on white stuff on red portion of engine block - could be spray from expansion steam or does this undoubetdley mean cracked head gasket. Sorry for the length just trying to figure if this is a $100 job or a $1,200! Thanks Jer
