Subject: 92 900 Leaking oil - Should I bother to replace the engine seal?

My '92 900 is leaking oil at the rear end of the engine/tranny. The oil pours out pretty bad (one ounce/15 min) and it looks to me that the main crankshaft seal is leaking (if not completely rotted away). I tightened all of the accessible crankcase, etc. bolts, but of course the seal is completely hidden from view. The leak is just as bad as ever. The car has >150,000 miles and runs well except for this (and the fact that it is shifting into high gear at higher and higher speeds as time goes on). I figure it will cost >USD 500 to fix, since it looks like the engine has to be removed as a first step. Is it worth the expense? Should I look for a used engine? Has anyone had similar experience? What about "Stop Leak" chemicals? Thanks Neil. Neil ======================================== Please remove the "nt" for legitimate email. Thanks! ========================================
