Subject: Automatic noise; survey 9-3 & 9-5

Hi all. I own a 2001 9-3 LPT. Early on I noticed a 'whining' noise in the auto at speeds specifically between 60 and 75 km/p/h (38-48m/p/h). The noise was only apparent under load, any gear and when warm (15 minutes of driving at least). There is no noise while freewheeling in neutral. At the 15,000km service, the dealer acknowledged the problem and replaced the auto. They said it sounded like a differential whining kind of noise. Ok; the new auto does exactly the same thing, only to a lesser degree. The dealer again looked at the car and said "yes, there's definitely a noise, that doesn't seem normal, we'll investigate" They thought it may have been one of the drive shaft or wheel bearings, but no, it's the auto's diff again. They then test drove 3 different late model cars: Brand new 2002 9-3 LPT, 2001 9-3 conv, 2002 9-5 Aero. Both the conv and the 9-5 Aero had a similar noise at the same speed. The dealer then called SAAB who advised that there is a noted problem with a 'planetary whine' within the diffs of these autos. Some autos have it, and some don't. Luck of the draw. Anyway, the dealer advised they'd never noticed this kind of noise until I brought it to their attention. Admittedly, it's a very subtle quiet noise, however, it's noticeable, and given all the sound proofing of these cars, I imagine would otherwise be quite loud. SAAB has said they'll replace the auto again if I'm not satisfied within the next 10,000km, but hey, who knows if I'll get a decent one. I'm surprised SAAB is aware of such a problem without letting it's dealers know (?) let alone the buying public. I'd appreciate comments back as to whether your late model cars have or don't have a similar noise at the speeds and conditions I referred to earlier. TIA & regards, Davo
