Subject: Mysterious rotating shifter

I don't know if anyone has experienced the same problem, but the shifter in my 1992 900 convertible is driving me up the wall. The shift knob looked a little bit crooked last fall. Since then it seems to be turning slowly clockwise. Since yesterday it has moved something like 30 degrees in the same direction. I assumed that the knob or shift lever was just loose, but I can't budge either one, in any gear, with or without pulling the reverse-lock release. On the other hand the knob keeps relentlessly rotating itself. It is pretty much upside down at the moment and looks really dumb. There doesn't seem to be any functional problem, but as I said, it looks dumb. Anyone have any ideas?
