Davo, I had instrument light problems - they would spontaneously extinguish, but would sometimes revive (temporarily) with a sharp smack on the dash-top above the rheostat (as discovered in anger one day). The problem was eventually cured when I : (a) removed the dash top and instrument cluster, and replaced several blown instrument lamps (b) removed and unplugged the rheostat - then replaced it with no further action. Instrument illumination has been OK ever since (touch wood). I suspect that the rheostat connector was at fault, though I clearly disturbed quite a few other connectors at the same time. If Bob is right in saying it's easy to remove (and I have no reason to disbelieve), then rheostat is the thing to try first. I would suggest removal and replacement before shelling-out for a replacement. You might just get lucky as I did.
