Subject: Re: oil consumption

Hi, I've got a 2001 9-3 TID (the "new" 125bhp, yes it is from GM), with 17,000 miles on it. It uses about a litre of oil every so often. Fairly weird, it can go for months (2000 to 4000 miles) hardly using any oil and then it uses 2/3s of the dipstick over 500 to 1000 miles. No idea why, no change in driving habits. I got fairly worried and charted oil use / fuel use over the past year, but there seems to be no obvious connection. I've got SID mpgs of between 46mpg (winter) and 52mpg (cool summer) between fueling (50l), with an average speed of 25 to 29 mph. The overall average consumption (based on the amount of fuel put in over the past 17,000 miles is 48.7mpg (north east England, fairly hilly, moderate congestion, majority of miles on the 15 mile A & B road run to work). No complaints, although I imagine other owners have done better. The warning / normal oil consumption is written in the owners handbook (and also there is a warning on the fuel cap, on these cars it seems wise to check the oil at least every time you fill up with fuel). Have you ever had the "Check Oil Level" warning appear on the SID? I've had it three times, and two out of the three the oil was over 2/3 full. Once it was just above min. From other posts in the group, the warning seems to be timed to every 4000 miles ish. BTW is the method for checking oil mentioned in the SAAB manual the "normal" way to check oil, i.e. on level ground 3 to 7 minutes after the engine has been switched off from warm? 3 minutes seems a bit short, so I usually leave it for 5 minutes, and the dipstick shows about 2/3 "full". This seems to correspond to a completely "full" reading after the car has been left overnight. Cheers, Tony. hamish aggis (ecossenopsamo.net) wrote: : what rate of consumption do you think would be classified as spectacular? : its definitely not the norm : and most people think its funny! : "Simon Putz" <simon.putznopsamline.de> wrote in message : news:aak897$7mm$06$1nopsam.t-online.com... : > hi, : > : > that TID is a diesel engine from GM (i think) : > some of them use a bit of oil, some use alot.. others dont. : > 1liter per 1400 miles doesnt sound like anything spectacular.. : > : > bye : > : > simon putz : > : >
