CT, I've just had a look at the circuit diagram in the Haynes Manual, and there doesn't appear to be anything which would give this symptom .... unless you have a tow hitch, in which case an internal fault in the electrical connector could conceivably give the problem you describe. However this seems unlikely if all you've done is change the brakelight switch. If I were you, I would remove the wires from the new switch (head under dash again), and try making the contact manually (with a bridging wire). This will eliminate a possible earthing fault at the switch (though it's hard to see how this might give your symptoms). Well you've got to try this if the switch is the only thing you've touched. Let us know how you get on.
