I am going to come play devils advocate... If you used the hot water extraction machine you'd probably be okay closing your trunk, I shampoo the carpets (Well, the floor mats) in my cars all the time and then I use a shop vac to pull out as much water as I can and then I usually put it on blow and get the floor mat as dry as I can and then stick it back in the car (Still slightly damp) and it dries in a day or two, and I presume most hot water extractors will dry the carpet better than a shop vac... Fabreeze is not simply a cleanser/perfume it has some sort of chemical in it (I think it is an organic compound) that neutralizes the smell, works wonders on smoke smell, (Last used car I bought was terrible, can't hardly tell I was smoked in now) I donno about gas though... Can you take out the piece of carpet? If it's removeable (Like...to get to the spare) then you could just fabreeze it/baking soda/Rug Doctor (Can you get those in Europe?)/Whatever and leave that out on your driveway without having to leave your trunk open Just my $0.02 Ryan And lets hope this doesn't turn into another Antifreeze post :-p
