Similarly, I trust American drivers more in a fwd car as opposed to a rwd car. It has more benign handling. If you go too fast, you WILL hit whatever is in front of you. In controlled and track situations, rwd is always faster and more controllable even in low friction conditions. The problem is that when you are simultaneously drinking your coffee, talking on the cell phone and checking on your children in the back seat, fwd or awd is usually the best selection for such drivers.
