You'd be amazed at the forces some car parts need to handle. I would never rely on a jury-rigged solution to a suspension problems - have a mechanic look at it. If you're not convinced, consider that if you had an accident and they discovered your custom repair, your insurance company could cause you serious problems, and the opposing legal counsel would have a field day about your negligence.
