What you say is true on dry roads, going in a straight line. Try it on wet roads and in a turn and see what happens. Ideally, you should rotate your tyres, so they have the same tread wear. Then you would replace all four at the same time. I know it sounds illogical to put the good tyres on the back, but try it in a safe place. Put the good tyres on the front and accelerate and brake into a turn. Then put the good tyres on the back and accelerate and brake in a turn.
