Subject: Re: New 9.3 cup holder (LONG)

I've tried everything. The center console cupholder is the only one that works for me - I can hit it with my spill-proof coffee mug without even looking now. I had the same thing in my '98 900SE and got used to it there so it was nothing to "relearn" when I traded up to the Viggen. To the Europeans who don't understand America's fixation with cupholders: I drive about 20 miles to work each day in Atlanta - if I were to take the "mass transit" available to me (massively screwed up transit, IMO), my daily commute, one way, would go from 30 minutes to 2 hours, minimum. That's just getting to work. The afternoon commute would probably be longer. I've tried it and it is unacceptable. So, in addition to having a roughly 30 minute drive to work, my company offers swill for coffee, and I'm not willing to pay $3 for a Starbuck's latte each morning, so I make a double latte at home before leaving. I'd love to have the transit available in NYC, London, and other cities that learned the benefits of rapid transit years ago - unfortunately Atlanta still hasn't gotten over the "it's still green - pave it" mentality. The other cupholders: The one on the dash in front of stereo is an example of designers on crack because no one in their right mind would put a beverage that close to all the expensive dash electronics. I'll put an empty can there sometimes for safe keeping, but never anything with "beverage" left in it. Hell, it also blocks the in-dash CD player. I also bought some of the European door clip-on cupholders. They look great and fit great in my all black Viggen, but are more likely to be kicked than anything else when entering/exiting the car. In addition, anyone who is relatively tall will not find these usable since it will get in the way of their legs. Finally they really don't support any sort of heavy beverage - I just don't trust them, or myself not to kick them inadvertently and then have an accident trying to catch the spillage. So, you didn't buy the ideal car for multiple beverages, but if you don't have the center console cupholder, figure out how to get one - I think like myself you'll get used to it. The other benefits of the car far outweigh the lack of big gulp storage.
