As for Saab safety: I have a '85 900 that got rear ended by a Ford E350 Van (analogous to the F350 Pickup) while I was stopped at a traffic light. The van was owned by a ceiling and wall contractor and was full of gypsum board so it was massing at least 3-5 tons and hit me between 5 & 10 mph. The thing went right over the Saab's bumper and folded the lift gate and bent the front bumper mounts on the secondary impact with the car in front of me, that's it. I had to replace the gate, fold out the left turn signal, and replace the radiator mount (the bumper mounts to the same piece of metal) and it was fine again. So I can vouch for the safety and construction of the classics, but as for newer ones, they would have probably been declared totaled by the insurance companies because of all the plastic in the bumpers and air bag replacement. This car had 198k mi on it and was running well until I cracked the engine block an a raised rail road rail at a decrepit old intersection in my town.
