Subject: 9000 - Uphill Turbo smell/check engine light?

I posted before about my SAAB... I decided to get the engine mounts, main seal, and front pipe fixed. I found mechanic that would do it for under $700, the first place and the nearest dealer quoted me $1200+, mainly since their labor cost per hour was pretty high. The car runs well and is a joy to drive. Here is the issue: Under normal driving my APC/turbo almost never kicks in (i.e. the needle never goes into the yellow region). Living in Ithaca, NY we do have lots of hills and when I go up some of the longer, steeper, hills the turbo will kick in and by the time I reach the top there will be a smell and the check engine light comes on. Any idea what is up with this? Thanks in advance for any help, -Atif
