After checking and changing many things with the carb, ignition parts etc. I finally took it to a repair shop. They fiddled with the carb too and finally got the idea to check the fuel intake/fuel level sensor device in the fuel tank. There were quite a lot of small aluminium chips in the tank (accrued over time from all the fuel filler hoses obviously) which were clogging the intake. After removing them, the engine ran flawlessly again. Don't know what that system is like in the 99, but it should be easy to check anyway.... -Antti
