Dave, Oops - I'd forgotten it's a 9-5 not a 95. Yes it does do mostly short trips (ten miles or so) and I accept that this will make corrosion worse than otherwise. I'm just trying to get a view on what's a reasonable expectation. Actually the mechanic wouldn't have needed to crawl inside to detect this problem. The metal had got so thin you could flex it with your fingers. And the service schedule does include 'check exhaust system and mountings, integrity and damage'. Meanwhile, apart from having nowhere to park my reading specs, its still a great car (although I liked the 9000 even more). Cheers, David Tong.
