I had to replace my alternator on my 88 900 (8-valve) and I found that the job was a lot more difficult than necessary. OK, I know that all the belt-driven accessories are inches from the firewall, but this was especially difficult. It did not bother me that there is it was necessary to drain a gallon of coolant from the system to move the heater hoses out of the way. But then I discovered that the alternator pivot bolt could not be withdrawn because it hit the firewall. I decided to jack the engine up a few inches to get some clearance, but the left side mount bolt could not be removed without moving the oil fill tube. I was able to replace the alternator, but there has got to be an easier way. Patrick
