Subject: Intermittent Power Steering failure

We have been experiencing an intermittent failure of the PAS on our 1999 9-5 (67,000 miles). It only happens at very low engine revs i.e. parking manoeuvres or v. slow cornering at less than say 5 mph. I believe the problem has been present since we bought the car six months back, but was just described to me as 'the steerings a lot heavier than our 9-3'. Initially it was a rare occurrence, but is now more frequent. A quick inspection of the poly-belt shows it to be OK (not worn or loose). The PAS fluid was slightly low, but topping it up has not cured the problem. There is no sign of a PAS fluid leak. The fluid is not obviously discoloured or sludgy, but I've just dipped some paper towel in the reservoir and there is a definite brown tinge rather than the pristine green I expected. There is no noticeable noise, but I have yet to reproduce the problem with the hood up and somebody else turning the steering wheel. My workaround for the problem is to depress the clutch and up the revs, but this is hardly recommended, especially on tight parking, plus my wife won't even consider it. Given that its an intermittent problem, I'm reluctant to let a repairer loose, probably resulting in costly and speculative repairs. So far none have expressed definite ideas as to the cause, just that I should bring it in to let them have a look at it. Any ideas?
