Mine did the same thing - I replaced the photosensitive transistor in the clock module with a generic phototransistor, and it works fine now. The big clue is that if it works ok when the headlights are on, it's likely the transistor. Since yours sounds like it might be heat sensitive, you may just have a bad solder joint in the area of the transistor.
