Pat, Our '99 with a 2.3 and a 5 speed is so well-balanced, that I can't imagine a large power increase as an improvement. As far as winter goes, the torque is so smooth and controllable that we feel no need for traction control here in southeast Michigan winters (yes, I have owned a car with TC). Stay with the 2.3, it will do everything you will need (caveat: I haven't had this car at Colorado altitudes!). Plus, we usually get 29.5 to 34 US mpg on highway trips!
