Subject: Re: Why does it Sputter and Idle Rough after Rain Falls?

Can someone please let me > know what these symptoms are an indication of? A few questions first: What is the behaviour of the idling? What RPM is the car running at? Does the car splutter even when you are applying the accelerator, or does "giving it some gas" ease the problem? Is the problem from cold starts only, or is the problem more prevalent with warm-starts? The simple one is possibly moisture in the distribution cap? The other week when it was foggy for days in my area, my 1985 900i stalled (very unusually) within the first five minutes of a cold start and would not start again despite large amounts of swearing, pleading and threatening the scrap yard :) I sprayed WD-40 across the back of the sparks and inside the dizzy cap. It fired up fine then and ran okay thereafter. Are you sure your idling is okay - I sometimes have problems on my 1985 900i where the idle will drop to around 500 RPM while the car is warming up. A little holding on the accelerator was necessary to prevent it stalling. A little tweak by my garage fixed this at service. This is where the air/fuel mixture is running a bit weak. The other problem I had was with repetitive stalls on my 1989 900 T. This was a combination of (1, problems at warm-start) a hole in my petrol filter (housed over the OSR wheel, rather than in the engine bay) and (2, problems from a cold-start) my AIC valve had developed a leak - the car struggled a bit until it had warmed up. To check this out, (1) Look for petrol on the road when you have come to rest and (2) listen out for air leaks on the pipes between the throttle intake and the crank-case. Hope this helps, Paul 1985 900i 16V 1989 900 Turbo S http://pjgh.go.dyndns.org/saab/index.html
