Subject: Re: gear shift knob

I've changed the shift knob in my 1995 900S. I replaced the original rubber knob with a SAAB factory leather one. The following is copied from the instruction sheet supplied by SAAB, with my comments in "quotes". Removal: 1. Place the gear lever in the neutral position. 2. Remove the emblem. "pry off with a small screwdriver" 3. Saw a slit in the original knob and remove the outer plastic casing. "using a hacksaw, saw straight down on center enough to split the outer casing" 4. Remove the tape to gain access to the three snap fasteners for the reverse gear release ring. "you should see a cylindrical plastic housing with three access holes; use a screwdriver in each hole to unclip the reverse gear ring" 5. Split the white plastic core with a hacksaw. IMPORTANT - saw only down to the metal tube. "again, saw straight down on center" 6. Tear off the plastic core with a polygrip or similar tool. "I think they mean pliers, channel-locks, or vise-grips; they must hold their dentures in with something else in Sweden" 7. Detach the lower edge of the rubber gaiter. "leather or rubber boot" Fitting: 1. Clean the splines on the metal tube with washing gasoline or similar. 2. Check that the spring is fitted. 3. Apply two part epoxy adhesive to the inside of the gear knob. IMPORTANT - make sure the glue flows properly into the knob. 4. Place the knob onto the splines and turn it so that the adhesive is evenly distributed. 5. Make sure that the number "4" on the knob is aligned with the letter "R" on the reverse gear actuator. 6. Lift the actuator so that the three locking hooks attach inside the knob. 7. Lift the gaiter slightly and press the knob down over the splines so that actuator stop is no more than 0-0.5 mm above the actuator stop pin. 8. Fit the gaiter and allow the adhesive to dry. I can't guarantee the '98 models are the same, but they likely are. This is my first Saab, so I was a little suprised that you can't remove the knob without destroying it. My previous cars were Toyotas and Hondas, and those knobs just screwed off. (They also loosened up on their own now and then, not an issue with Saab design). Also, the reverse gear lock-out complicates the design. I wouldn't recommend using any knob not designed for a Saab. The procedure sounds a lot worse than it actually is.
