Subject: Re: Oil in distributor

Karl, Oil appearing in the distributor can be down to a few causes, the main ones being either plain and simple failure of the Distributor shaft seal , or Pressure building in the crankcase because of gases getting past the piston rings and causing oil to dribble into area's such as the distributor. 1st you need to figure out WHY the oil is getting into the distributor, I would suggest you make a start with checking the engine breathing system for blockages, crankcase breathers etc should be thoroughly cleaned and and any perished hoses or blocked gauzes replaced. If this does not cure the problem, then you need to delve a little deeper......... You would be well advised to get a hold of a manual before attempting the work involved in stripping the distributor, and personally I would tend to favour purchasing a remanufactured/Second-hand unit, as if the internal seals are worn allowing oil into the unit, then its a fair bet the shaft bearings are worn as well, this would allow the shaft to 'float' around in use and upset the ignition timing. If you decide to "give it a go" and attempt a repair, 1st find out if there is a company locally that can supply the parts you may need, Bearings, Seals Etc, and if they can Press the bearings onto the input shaft. If there is you could remove the distributor and start to find the cause, However, the work involved is simply not cost effective these days and a reconditioned/second hand unit is by far the best course of action. Any Shop manual will give full details on the distributor and how to get at, and inside, it. Hope that little lot helps Davey (Dave Bee's Auto's) Karlheinz G.
