Mine has suffered the same problem for some time now, and I've repeatedly put off doing the job, though I did find a nearly new heater matrix for a reasonable price. From what I've read: 1) You do need to discharge the A/C. 2) It's best to replace the fan unit at the same time as these tend have a similar life to the heater core. Please don't take my word though.
