Subject: 1985 900 8v engine replacement

Well, I finally started on the damn thing... I am replacing the 8v engine in my 1985 900 (base) beastie with one taken from a 1985 SPG. Here's what I've done: Day One- I stripped the interior of the car down to bare metal (The seats were in crap shape, as was the carpet. Found a big hole in the floor boards in the passenger foot well) Day Two- I removed all electrical components from the interior (to be replaced with ones from a 1987 turbo, allowing power accessories to be installed). Day Three- I removed the hood, radiator mount and AC condenser coil. This was a pain because I had been in an accident and the bumper mounts and radiator mount had bent. The solution involved a Milwaukee Sawzall and a fine toothed metal cutting blade. Tip: When cutting bolts, do so at an angle in the junction of the bolt and nut. Day Four- We (My trusty assistant and myself) drained and removed the radiator, disconnected all engine electrical components, removed the air filtration system, fuel system, and all vacuum lines. We also disconnected the exhaust system, again with the Sawzall. Had to do some brake work to remove the axles (the brakes had seized and we needed to turn the wheels for easier access to the axle boot fasteners). This involved a 36 oz steel mallet, a cold chisel and some wire cutters. Day Five, Disconecting the engine from the suspension (Don't ask, yet), is too come next week. The point of this message? If you have any suggestions that will make our lives (My trusty assistant and myself) any easier, please do so. We need all the brain matter available. Jeremy Brown
