I can't believe you have actually been living in the US for 5 years and claim that "recycling is nearly non-existent". What backwater state in the union are you living in? In Illinois we have had curbside recycling for about 10 years. Glass, paper, plastic and metal tins are put into a separate container from the other garbage and are picked up once a week by trucks with a large "Recycle Now!" logo on the side. In many places there are also recycling centers where people can bring everything from unused paint to old car batteries. Every company I have worked for with more than 50 employees had special containers in every work area for recyclable paper, and the kitchen areas had recycling containers for beverage cans. I am always seeing packaging that says "Made from 85% post-consumer waste". Even the napkins at McDonald's say they are made from 50% recycled materials.
