Subject: High Octane vs Regular and do you really know what Octane is? :)

First off, Octane is not an additive. It is how the fuel is blended. Think of Octane as a fire retardant. The higher the octane, the slower the burn, less prone to detonation. My race car runs 110 leaded, why? Because it is high compression, and if there wasn't such a high octane rating, the fuel would detonate under compression before the spark plug can light it, on time. So, that is where the knock sensor comes in. It isn't a good thing to have that thing retarding the timing advance all the time on you. Regular gas is ok on a stock, low pressure turbo system. Go to a high pressure turbo, you should only be using high octane. If you love your aluminum head, valves, and pistons and want to keep them looking the same way throughout their life, USE the higher octane (on high pressure turbos). If you don't have a turbo, check the compression ratio on the specs of your car. Anything below 9-1 is fine on regular gas. IN FACT, if you took a car that can run perfectly fine on 87 Octane, and then you put in 110 unleaded, what do you think would happen?? More performance? NO!!!! The complete opposite! The higher octane (110) would actually slow you down, and make your car run bad. Oh, and last comment about fuel colours and such. Race fuel looks like it came out of a rusted tank, and it smells like really really really old gas, and it gets you high mighty fast. So, yes, I would say that most fuels from different suppliers such as Sunoco, Shell, whatever, may vary in colour and smell. In Canada, premium 94 Octane from Sunoco costs 10cents Canadian per litre, (4xlitres = a little more than a US gallon), making it FOURTY cents more per gallon here. That is a lot!!! Ahh, race fuel costs about $3.25 per litre, hmmm about $13.00 per gallon.
