You have just made my point! The "many other parts of the world" you mention include many different countries. For the sake of argument, lets say it is only five (although it is probably more) meaning that the energy to make those products is spread among five countries. If we were able to do that in the US, we would have 5 regions, each of which are still larger than any country in Europe, using 6% of the world energy (30 / 5 = 6). Is that an acceptable percentage of energy consumption? I find this discussion in a Saab forum to be very ironic since people here are driving economical cars and not the gas sucking SUV's normally associated with conspicuous consumption. It started when one person inquired about how he could save a few cents a gallon on gasoline. Everyone likes to save; that is one of the cornerstones of eliminating waste and improving efficiency. But some touchy person incorrectly interpreted that as a complaint against the "high" price of gas in the US and then spouted off some falsehoods about current US environmental policy. Contrary to what has been said here previously, the US is and has been working on reducing pollution and energy consumption for over 30 years. Right now I am looking for a new car that uses alternate fuels to take advantage of a clean-fuel tax incentive that was put into place last year. Too bad Saab doesn't make any of these clean-fuel cars that run on ethanol (E-85), compressed natural gas, or electricity. I'm tired of people that don't know anything about living in the US complaining to us about our style of living every chance they get. It appears to me to be signs of jealousy because of our productivity, mobility, high standard of living, and that we are the last remaining superpower -- or it could just be that some have made a hobby of complaining about how others live their lives?
