Nice comment, but isn't it rooted a bit earlier than that? Wasn't this an unintended result of post WWII reconstruction. As we all know, it is easier to instate a tax than to repeal it. I'd think it'd be hard to repeal it. Funny, though, Europeans I know that have moved here seem to want big cars with big engines which would be prohibitive 'back home'. One lusted after an early eighties monte carlo with a v8 and another after a v6 maxima.
