This is a case of cause and effect. Because in the US the cost of owning and operating a car were low, public transportation wasn't used much. Because of this it isn't commercially viable to operate a public transportation system. Because there is poor public transport people need a different and possibly cheap way to get around, which is a car. On the other hand, there is a bus stop less then 100 meters from my house, it even goes kind of in the right direction, only to find out that at the trainstation you have to wait for about half an hour to go further. By car it takes me half an hour to get work, by public transport I wouldn't even have left my home town yet. So even though our public transport looks better on paper in practice it may be just a bad as you're used to. -- Mager
