There are usually plugs and sockets involved, like around the back: aerial, power, odd signals exchanged with the rest of the car. Carefully disconnect each in turn and look for dirt, corrosion, damage, &c. If you find dirt, try removing it with a suitably shaped brush or wiper dampened with a light alcohol (ideally isopropyl alcohol, as used to clean computer disks, but pure methanol has served me well in the past). First test paintwork/plastic for any tendency to be damaged by the alcohol (unlikely but you never know). Wipe dry with fresh lint-free tissue or cotton wool. Be gentle. Corrosion can be iffier to deal with. I hesitate to suggest any one course, as the method used should be appropriate to the task. Again, be gentle. After, treat as for dirt. Damage... Well, make it up as you go along. If there is a lot of any of the above, ask yourself why. -- Andrew Stephenson
