Around here it is rare that an authorised Saab dealer will sell a car beyond 5 years old. The authorised dealers usually gives plenty of mechanical warranties that would cover such problems. Older cars are sold lower down the food chain. If no or little warranties are given, then the first thing to do with an old car is obviously to have it serviced, then the cambelt problem might have come to light. It is fairly certain that as little money as possible has been spent on the car before sale, since from the sellers perspective, that's money down the drain. The reason that an old car is sold is frequently that expensive repairs are coming on the horizon and the seller is weighing up his options. In many cases this is not a big problem for a buyer who is prepared to take a fresh look at things. When I bought my 9k for almost 6 years ago, it needed a fair bit of attention, but I was enthusiastic and got it sorted out. Today it is absolutely perfect, none of the usual niggles that we discuss here, and in no way would I want to sell it, unless something very expensive comes up on the horizon...
