I'd guessed I'd not done something I should have done... How bad is the bad news? The bearings were not so tight that I couldn't turn the shafts by hand and were not so loose as I could notice (vague I know for something where tolerances are measured in 1/000s of an inch), nor are there any strange noises now that the box is back in the car. So what sort of impact will this have on the life of the bearings? At this point I am tempted to leave things as they are (it is not a trivial amount of work to take it all out and do it again). I would expect any bearing failure to be preceded by noise or vibration for a good few miles before doing anything that would damage any more than the bearings themselves (so if I have to remove the box again I might as well wait until the bearings actually give out). Are my assumptions here naive and should I be taking this a little more seriously? I would really appreciate some more detail here, I like to learn by my mistakes, so if anyone could give me details of exactly how things should be done I would be very grateful. I will of course make sure I put a note on the web page to warn others about this. cheers David "meme meme" <splitscreen69nopsamsnet.com.au> wrote in message news:3da2c78f$0$23171$afc38c87nopsam.optusnet.com.au... > > "David Haydon" <home01nopsamorld.com> wrote in message > news:cijo9.1280$5t4.155256nopsamfep1-win.server.ntli.net... > > Walt, it just so happens that I've just replaced the 2nd gear synchro on > my > > '98 9k aero.
