Subject: Re: TURBO or turbo?

To the best of my knowledge it goes like this, at least in the UK. 2.0l lpts from '91/92 to '96 don't have intercoolers, all the others do. Starting with the CS makeover in '91/92? the B202 2.0l lpt 150 bhp did not have an intercooler. Max boost pressure 0.45 bar. '94 saw the introduction of the B204 engine and Trionic-5, but still no intercooler. Boost pressure increased slightly to 0.48 bar to compensate for lower compression ratio of B204 engine. The first year(ish) production with B204 engines also had a BPC valve etc. but this was soon dropped. In '96 the B204 lpt at last had an intercooler as standard - but boost pressure was dropped to around 0.35 bar to compensate for the increased density of the cooler air. None of these cars had a BPC valve - although the wiring is there for it. The B234 engine with T-5 was introduced in '93 this was a 200 bhp fpt, boost pressure 0.8 bar. The Aero version was 225 bhp and 1.1 bar. This engine was always equipped with an intercooler. In '94 T-5 had a slight makeover - different crank position sensor electronics but nothing major. The 2.3l lpt 170 bhp was also introduced in '96 this also had an intercooler. Boost pressure was around 0.3/0.5? bar. Johannes: To tell whether or not you have an intercooler just follow the 'plumbing' from the throttle housing back to the turbocharger. If it goes via a radiator like thing in front of the 'real' cooling system radiator then you have an intercooler. Paul: I wish you and Orca the very best of fortunes. AndyH '94 9000 CDE B204 chipped and cooled.
