A replacement transmission in the US is $1795 from http://www.saabsite.com/900new/900&94to98transmission.htm. Although shipping to Santiago would be rather expensive, you would still have considerable savings over the quoted price even assuming that the labor and shipping would each be $1000. Too bad you can't get the car to Switzerland (or somewhere else in the EU) where repairs would undoubtedly be less expensive. Too bad I can't get a cool job like yours that would let me relocate to all those interesting places ;-).
