Subject: Re: GM plans Saab Restructuring

Salutations: Well - it's kind of history really.. Opel released a sports car here in north america some years ago that was so bad it literally spoiled the brand in everybody's mind.. Also - a lot of people including myself, feel that the over design, build and sheet metal standards have fallen considerably since the GM take over (I still proudly drive my '89 9000 CD daily). So that while Opel probably makes fine new cars - when I can push my thumb into the rear quarter panel on a new 9-5 and leave a dimple - I have to say that I feel the concerns are right.. This goes to why a lot of people bought Saabs in the first place - they were stiff and safe cars that can tangle with most other cars and trucks (trees, embankments, guard rails too) without the aid of Airbags and still get most everybody out alive with nothing more than seatbelt welts.. If the model or service prices had dropped when they went to Opel - then I think everyone would be shutting up - but they didn't.. In fact, while I agree the Opel-Saab marriage is probably all that kept the brand alive in this terrible age where the auto manufacturer must make SUV type margins on anything coming off an assembly line - I do not think that they made or maintain a better Saab for the price.. So - I keep my Saab rusthecked every year and keep repairing things that go bad and will even pop for some fresh paint and a new windscreen shortly as, in the end, it actually works out a little cheaper in total to maintain and repair a really well built car like the '89 9000 CD than to replace a mediocre one every 3-5 years..
