Subject: Re: '92 Saab 900 Turbo Grinding Noise increases with RPM

You can isolate the problem better by seeing if it's related to road speed, engine speed, or turbo boost. If it's a scraping-grinding noise, and it is near the belts, take a look at the main pulley that the two belts go around (bottom-rear of engine, next to the firewall). If it's turbo boost-related, it could be the turbo; really ugly noises, but it'd be up front. Road speed related would indicate tranny type problems. But, if it's by the belts as you say, check the belts. If that whole area is OK, but the sound is right there, is it a rattling noise? How many miles do you have on it; the timing chain is inside right there. Hard to describe the noise of a chain from here, but once you've heard it, you'll know. Dave Hinz
