Hi! Today, when I was making a few turns on the parking lot with my 900i16v-'91 I heard a cracking sound from the front of the passenger comparment, and it seems I lost power steering. The snow ground was plain flat and I was reversing slowly while turning the steering wheel. Now here's what I've gathered so far: - Power steering fluid level normal, power steering pump V-belt is in place and is as tight as before (as far as I can tell by simply fingering it, will check tomorrow), tire pressure OK - After starting up, power steering seems to work again (the wheel is quite light and I can hear that little buzzing) but when I accelerate, the wheel eventually becomes heavier. It may ease again for a while a bit later but in general it feels that the power steering only partially works most of the time I drive, or that something is blocking the rotation of the steering column/axle. I haven't driven enough to give a more detailed description. - All the time, when I turn the steering wheel enough (= a bit more than what's needed to keep the car on the road; basically everytime I make a turn at a crossing), I hear cracking/creaking grinding/metallic-bending sounds while turning the steering wheel. (In Finnish: narisee ja raksuu.) - As far as I can tell, the sound seems to come somewhere between the steering wheel and engine compartment, perhaps from the shafts or the universal joints. You can hear the sound very clearly when sitting on the driver's seat. Any comments or ideas of what it might be and how to isolate the problem further? The car is drivable, basically only issues are the cracking sound and the [partial] loss of power steering [often]. best regards, Simo -- 0110011001101111011011110110001001100001011100100010110101110000
