Subject: Replacing Interior Cabin Light Switch on classic 900; Must I Remove the Console?

Hello Everyone, First, I am a newbie Saab owner, having just purchased a '94 classic convertible. I am grateful for the information contained here. I will post a separate message re my experiences so far with this strange and wonderful car. For now I'll just say I love it so far. My car is the last year of the "classic" Saab for the convertible in the US, the hardtops having switched over to the newer body style in 1993. There is a 3-position rocker-style switch just below the shift boot which controls the interior cabin lights. When I bought the car (just a month ago), it worked fine. Now, however, the lights only come on when a door is opened, no matter what position you put the switch in (ie the "always on" or "always off" positions don't work). I suspect this was caused by my spilling of a large coffee in this area during my first week with the car. I have since installed a cup holder, but that's another thread. I've tried applying gentle heat to the area overnight in the hopes that the switch just needed to dry out, but that didn't work. It looks like I need to replace the switch. I've found an online source. My question is, do I need to pull out that whole floor console between the seats to remove/install this switch, or is there some way of just removing the switch without all that fuss? I just bought the Bently service manual and although they have some instructions re removing the console, the first step shows some screws which are found underneath the leather shift boot. However, they skip the step which describes how you get the shift boot off! I don't want to damage anything. So, my questions (for now!): 1. Do I need to remove the console? If not, how do you remove the switch? And... 2. If I need to remove the console, how do you remove the shift boot? Thank you very much for any help anyone can offer! Brad
