My signature is a joke about the way people pronounce the name of my state, New Jersey. I believe there is one other state that forbids self-serve gasoline. I don't believe there are any rational reasons for the law. They cite safety, but obviously, self-serve is safe enough for everywhere else. A bill to legalize self-serve comes up in the state legislature every year or two and loses. Apparently, the status quo is serving somebody. I honestly don't know whom it serves. I doubt the gas station attendents are organized and have influence on the legislature. The odd thing is that gas prices are lower than in neighboring states. I believe our excise tax is lower than in the other states, but I have also heard that gas prices rose in the states when self-serve became legal. That is surprising, since you would expect lower costs when customers pump their own gas. -- Tom Reingold Noo Joizy
