I have this problem on my 1996 900SE also, and I would be interested to hear if anyone has found a remedy. I turned up the flap at the rear above the spare, to let the moisture dry out, and then sprayed the area thoroughly with Lysol spray to kill the musty odor. However, I'd like to find a more permanent solution. My impression is that the water finds its way past the rubber seal around the hatch, and then collects in the area just in front of the bumper.
