Subject: Re: What makes a Saab Engine so durable ?

But, as others have said, 5 main bearings in 4 cyl. engine is a lot. Likewise, the materials they choose to use will have a great deal to do with engine longevity. However, I don't buy the argument that an 8 cylinder is inherently more reliable than a 4 cylinder having comparable power and displacement. The 4 cylinder will have a lot fewer parts to fail, and from that point of view, can be declared inherently more reliable. I've got a Shop Manual on order for my car. I'll be interested to get a better look at how the 2.3t is put together. I was initially astounded at the performance of such small displacement engines -particularly the 2.3T in the Aero. I have a pick-up with GM's 5.7L engine that only gets around 290 hp, & 330 ft lbs torque. The 9-5 Aero produces most of that power in a powerplant less than half the size, with plenty of low end torque in roughly the same rpm range and similar compression ratios. To think the engine is also as durable as the one in my truck runs counter to normal reason -for those of us who normally insist everything is a trade-off. So the original question is a good one, but I'd add: How do they get that kind of power out of such a small displacement? > Bob wrote: > > > What engineering features does Saab incorporate > > that allows these engine to go 300K miles without a major rebuild ? > > > > Give me what you've got - I need some good info to beat a 8-cyl > > owner over the head with.
