In article <zwdK9.2975$j_4.326653nopsamread1.prod.itd.earthlink.net>, mjbullardnopsampammersdie.earthlink.net says... > While the base oils should be perfectly compatable, the additive packages will be different, and as such, > should not be mixed if you can avoid it. Throw an extra quart/litre of your favor motor oil in the car before > going on any long drives. If you need to top off, by all means make sure you have the proper amount of oil > in you engine, but try to stick with one type, both in the engine, and from oil change to oil change. (this probably applies to gaskets > as well) > > I was thinking long journeys back from somewhere you aren't familair with, where a top up with any synthetic is better than not topping up, and the old nonnon of mixing mineral oil. But in the case of long journeys from home, I would agree, prepare yourself before you go, and take top up oil, saves taking any chances. But you know how it is, you keep your spare can in the boot/trunk/hatch. You check your oil water and tyres before you leave. All is well. You do you 2-300 miles (fairly long run in the UK), and end up somewhere remote for the weekend. Before setting back you do the same pre-flights and notice the oil a little, but not drastically low, go for the topup can, and then realsie that you used it gradually over the last few 2kmiles worth of long drive weekends, and the only garage in the village is tied to a rival brand. What to do? Top up with the minimum possible on the "Foreign" brand, or take a risk and drive home on a little low? Either way, drain and refill when done. -- Carl Robson http://www.bouncing-czechs.com
