Haven't dealt with the problem, but you might find a European brand, such as Peg Perego, is designed with smaller cars (or which yours isn't, by European standards) in mind. We tried the PP (Mamas and Papas in the UK) infant seat in our car today at their store (and proceeded to go order it somewhere cheaper LOL) and there was space to spare even with the front seat right back for 6ft 3in DH.
