What had happened was that the little half cogwheel which actuates the switch had separated from the lock barrel. It seemed easier to obtain a secondhand gearchange/switch casting with all the bits including lock so this is what I did and am back on the road. I filed down an 11mm socket into something resembling a diseased tooth in order to make removal of the casting a lot easier. Having two keys now is not too much of a problem. It's an astonishingly complex piece of over-engineering - the sort of alloy diecasting that makes you wonder if Saab had somebody visiting from the aircraft division the day that design was authorised for production.
