I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has successfully reinstalled the entire wiper assembly on this model Saab. Background: The driver side wiper stopped working. The driver side wiper, as I found, is a slave, rotated by a funky cam with a cable wrapped around it, much like a primitive drill or firemaking device. As the linkage arm reciprocates the cable-wrapped cam turns the wiper shaft. The cable had loosened and slipped off. The press-fit cam worked loose from the shaft as I was preparing to remove the whole assembly to get at the cable. The good news is that this gave enough clearance to remove the whole assembly, once I removed the mounting bolts. With the whole assembly on the bench it was relatively easy to figure out how to redo and tighten the cable that had come loose. The bad news is that although the mechanism all seems to work properly now, I now don't have enough clearance to get the whole assembly back into its position on the firewall. Even if I remove the wiper motor (praying that I can get it back into place on the bracket after the main assembly is in its proper place), I can't get both wiper shafts into the rectangular openings for them in the body just below the windshield. If I jockey one end in, the other wiper shaft hangs up on the lip of the hood opening by about 1/4 inch. Am I missing something? Is there a non-destructive way to squeeze this unit in?
